The Predator sequels have been a complete failure up to this point, and none of them have been able to match the quality of the first picture. Prey (2022) brings back the minimalism that was integral to the success of the first game, but everything has been pared down even more to give the game a more authentic and unsettling vibe. It contains moments that are reminiscent of The Revenant, and there is never a time when you can say for certain that the folks we are cheering for are completely secure and safe. The location is very stunning, but I was skeptical about whether or not the movie would live up to its potential and avoid making the story too convoluted. The movie The Predator is an example of a movie that tries to accomplish too much, whereas the movie Prey (2022) is the antithesis of that. It flourishes when there is peace and quiet across the environment (just before each attack). Now that he's a part of two different series, Trachtenberg has already given us the finest sequel in each of them. It is clear that he has the skills to make the most of the time period and deliver the goods, but the atmosphere of this film is perhaps its strongest suit. A growing feeling of foreboding emerges as the environment continues to deteriorate. That emotion provides the film with its intensity, and it maintains that level for the whole of the third and final (link) act.
